PrayerMate – An App to Help You Pray with Purpose

Updated: Jan 29, 2019

Some time ago, I found myself frustrated with my prayer life. It wasn’t the first time, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. What was one of my frustrations? Well, there were things I knew I needed to be regularly praying about, and I wasn’t. Some things are just too important to only pray for “when the Lord brings them to mind.” I wanted to be more disciplined, yet the saying held true: The spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak. Can anyone relate? I decided it was time to stop making excuses and find a way to organize my prayer life so that I was regularly praying for the most important things in a systematic way.

Then, I had an epiphany: There must be an app for that! (Very spiritual, I know!) So, I set out on a journey to find an app that might diminish my frustration. After downloading a number of apps, and checking their features, I found one that turned out to be nearly exactly what I was looking for. It’s an app called PrayerMate.

What does it do? PrayerMate allows you to create and organize prayer lists. For example, you can have a list of Scriptures to pray over yourself for your own spiritual growth. You can create lists of family, friends, pastors (Yes! Put me on your list!), people you want to come to Christ, missionaries, etc. Under each item that is within each list, you can add your own notes of specifically how you want to pray for that family member or friend or situation.

Best feature? Perhaps my favorite feature is the ability to set certain lists to appear every day along with the number of items from that list you wish to pray for. This allows you to prioritize certain lists in your praying. For example, you may want to pray over your entire family every day or every few days, while you work through other lists more slowly. Definitely use this feature!

How it works: Once you have your lists set up, it’s time to pray. Each prayer session, you select how many total items you wish to pray for in that session. Then, based on your list settings, it will bring up those items one at a time. For example, if you choose to pray for 2 people every day from your Family list, you are guaranteed to see those. Otherwise, it will go through your lists, keeping track of what you’ve prayed for most recently and working you down your other lists. It pulls up each item one at a time showing you your notes. When you’re finished praying for one item, simply swipe from right to left, and the next item will be displayed.

It's impact on my life: Revolutionizing is a strong word, but that is how I would describe the impact of this app on my prayer life. As new things come to mind, I simply add them to a list. No more, “Sure, I’ll pray about that!” and then totally forgetting. Now I’m praying regularly and systematically about the most important things in life: my family, my church, the lost, my friends in ministry, missions, etc.

Do you need a little more intentionality in your prayer life? Get PrayerMate. Set aside 10, 20, 30 minutes at the same time each day. And let this tool help you regularly pray about the things that matter most. Let me know how it helps you!
